GIN E-Bikes addresses Customs-seized eBike chargers

Earlier this summer, a quantity of GIN E-Bike branded eBike chargers were refused entry at the UK border and destroyed as the chargers presented a “high risk of hire” as the transformer and charger did “not meet the requirement for creepage and clearance”.

Further official details from the Office for Product Safety and Standards noted that the fuse in the plug did not contain a ballast and was “considered counterfeit”: The China-originated products were found to not “meet the requirements of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 or the Plugs & Sockets (Safety) Regulations 1994.”

GIN E-Bikes has addressed the incident in a press statement, revealing that 10 chargers were found to have issues. Further to the destruction of those chargers, GIN has been in touch with customers who may have received chargers from the relevant batch. The firm said it “appreciate[s] the trust our customers place in us and remain committed to delivering safe and reliable products”.

eBike charger and battery safety have made many headlines in the past 24 months. Evidence has been passed to CIN that official bodies are alert and investigating eBikes with the spotlight now on the industry, including market surveillance from the DVSA.

Here’s the full statement from GIN E-Bikes.

At GIN E-Bikes, safety and quality are the pillars of our business. Recently, we encountered an issue regarding a batch of chargers that were seized by customs due to certification concerns. Upon inspection, it was found that 10 chargers from this batch were not certified and therefore deemed inappropriate for use with our bikes.

We want to reassure our customers and partners that these uncertified chargers have already been recalled and disposed of by the customs authority. We had anticipated this outcome and have been working diligently to address the situation.

Furthermore, we have already initiated direct outreach to all customers who may have received chargers from this batch. We are actively regulating the situation by offering replacements or alternative solutions to ensure that no one is inconvenienced or left without a safe and certified charger.

For full details on the government’s decision regarding this issue, please refer to the official notice [here].

As always, GIN E-Bikes continues to uphold the highest standards of safety and compliance. We have implemented enhanced checks in our supply chain to prevent similar issues from arising in the future. We appreciate the trust our customers place in us and remain committed to delivering safe and reliable products.
